About Autism...Under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th Ed. Text Rev. 2000), there are five disorders that share distinct characteristics unique to classify and identify an Austism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These are Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, Rett’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified. Autistic Disorder or Autism is more prevalent in boys than girls at a ratio of 4:1. The Autism Society of America and other organizations estimate that 1 in 166 children are currently diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorders here.
